Birgit Althans (geb. 1960) ist Professorin für Pädagogik an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf und leitet aktuell das BMBF-Forschungsvorhaben „Wasteland? Ländlicher Raum als Affektraum und Kulturelle Bildung als Pädagogik der Verortung“ (2020-2023). Sie studierte Diplom-Pädagogik an der Carl-von-Ossietzky-Universität Oldenburg. 1999 promovierte sie zum Thema „Der Klatsch, die Frauen und das Sprechen bei der Arbeit“ (Althans 2000) an der Freien Universität Berlin, dort habilitierte sie auch 2005 mit einer Arbeit zu Beziehungen zwischen Gender, Sozialer Arbeit und frühen Management- und Organisationstheorien in Deutschland und den USA in den Jahren 1880-1930, die 2007 unter dem Titel „Das maskierte Begehren. Frauen zwischen Sozialarbeit und Management“ im Campus-Verlag veröffentlicht wurde. Von 2000 bis 2008 arbeitete sie als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin im Fachbereich Erziehungswissenschaften und Psychologie und im Sonderforschungsbereich 447 „Kulturen des Performativen“ an der Freien Universität Berlin und war von 2007 bis 2008 zusätzlich konzeptionell im Unterprojekt „Medien“ im DFG-Projekt „Repräsentationen der Geburt“ tätig. Von 2008 bis 2013 war sie Professorin für Sozialpädagogik an der Universität Trier und von 2013 bis 2018 Professorin für „Empirische Grundschulpädagogik mit dem Schwerpunkt Genderforschung“ an der Leuphana Universität Lüneburg. Sie ist Mitglied der DGFE-Sektion „Allgemeine Erziehungswissenschaft“, im Vorstand der DGFE-Kommission „Pädagogische Anthropologie“, Mitglied des „Internationalen Zentrums für Historische Anthropologie“ an der FU Berlin, im Beirat des „Jahrbuchs Frauen – und Geschlechterforschung in den Erziehungswissenschaften“ sowie Mitglied der Berliner Redaktion der „Zeitschrift für Kulturwissenschaft“ und seit 2016 Mitglied des Editorial Boards der Zeitschrift “Diversitatis – Zeitschrift für Diversity-Forschung und -management“. Seit 2010 ist sie zudem Mitglied der „Freunde des Theaters Trier“. Sie leitet zudem noch bis Ende 2020 das vom BMBF geförderte Forschungsprojekt „Transkulturelle Praktiken im postmigrantischen Theater und Schule – Method Mixing als Transmission“, sowie „Materialität von Geschlecht und pädagogischer Autorität – Interferenzen von Körpern und Dingen in Bildungsinstitutionen“ (im Rahmen der Förderlinie Geschlecht-Macht-Wissen, gefördert durch das MWK-Niedersachsen). Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen im Bereich Pädagogischer und Historischer Anthropologie, Gender und Cultural Studies sowie Material Feminism. Ihre Forschungsinteressen im Projekt sind NatureCulture-Relationen, affekttheoretische Bezüge zur Pädagogik und die Konzeption einer Pädagogik der Verortung.
Birgit Althans (born 1960) is Professor of Pedagogy at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and currently heads the BMBF research project “Wasteland? Rural Areas as Affective Space and Cultural Education as Pedagogy of Situating” (2020-2023). She studied pedagogy at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg. In 1999, she received her doctorate on the topic of „Der Klatsch, die Frauen und das Sprechen bei der Arbeit“ (Althans 2000) at the Free University of Berlin, where she also completed her habilitation in 2005 with a thesis on relations between gender, social work, and early management and organizational theories in Germany and the U.S. in the years 1880-1930, which was published in 2007 under the title „Das maskierte Begehren. Frauen zwischen Sozialarbeit und Management“ published by Campus-Verlag. From 2000 to 2008, she worked as a research assistant in the Department of Education and Psychology and in the Collaborative Research Center 447 „Cultures of the Performative“ at the Free University of Berlin, and from 2007 to 2008, she was also conceptually involved in the sub-project „Media“ in the DFG project „Representations of Birth.“ From 2008 to 2013 she taught and researched as professor of social pedagogy at the University of Trier and from 2013 to 2018 as professor of „Empirical Primary School Pedagogy with a Focus on Gender Research“ at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg. She is a member of the DGFE section „General Educational Science“, on the board of the DGFE Commission on „Pedagogical Anthropology“, member of the „International Center for Historical Anthropology“ at the FU Berlin, on the advisory board of the „Jahrbuch Frauen – und Geschlechterforschung in den Erziehungswissenschaften“ as well as a member of the Berlin editorial board of the „Zeitschrift für Kulturwissenschaft“ and since 2016 a member of the editorial board of the journal „Diversitatis – Zeitschrift für Diversity-Forschung und -management“. She has also been a member of the „Friends of the Theater Trier“ since 2010. She also led the BMBF-funded research project „Transcultural Practices in Postmigrant Theatre and Schools – Method Mixing as Transmission“ (2016-2020), as well as the project „Materiality of Gender and Pedagogical Authority – Interferences of Bodies and Things in Educational Institutions“ (within the funding line Gender-Power-Knowledge, funded by the MWK-Niedersachsen) until the end of 2020. Her research interests in the project are natureculture relations, affect-theoretical references to pedagogy, and the conception of a pedagogy of situating.
